This characteristic of self-regulating systems is called homeostasis, and manifests itself at all levels through feedback mechanisms. Essentially, homeostatic mechanisms interpret any change as a threat to what is accepted as “normal”. We can consider that resistance to change is proportional to the scale and speed at which it occurs. Strategies involving a sense of survival require an element of stability.

But the very nature of life involves change and impermanence. It is therefore important to reflect on how we deal with the phenomenon of homeostasis, how we bring about positive qualitative changes, and how we ensure that progress is sustainable.

On the path to mastery, we shall list five guidelines that can support us in any area of life:

Become aware of homeostasis — Accept that there will be resistance at some level within the system. Develop the ability to assess your feelings thoughtfully, as they may indicate that you are changing in a beneficial and lasting way. Remember that changes in one part affect the system as a whole, particularly in terms of relationships.

Develop the ability to deal with resistance to change — Dealing skilfully with discomfort is a key part of overcoming resistance. Naturally, it is important to combine the determination to press ahead with the sensitivity to recognise personal and systemic limits.

Build up support networks — The most effective support network consists of people who have experience of a process similar to your own and who are willing to share it. We can highlight the importance of a sense of community and belonging on the path to mastery, whether directly through sharing or through the emotional support of those close to you.

Practise regularly — Stability and comfort arise naturally from the familiarity that comes with continued practice. What at first feels like discomfort becomes a challenge that fosters growth as time goes on. On the path to mastery, practice is the very foundation of the path itself. And one very promising aspect is that regular practice provides a kind of fundamental homeostasis, which offers a stable foundation amidst the uncertainties of change.

Think of learning as a lifelong practice — To learn is to change. All authentic education is a process that transforms the learner. The most important thing we learn is how to learn. This means learning to cope with homeostasis throughout our lives, which characterises the path to mastery – a path that never ends.

A resistência a qualquer tipo de mudança é um fator natural, independente do aspecto qualitativo da mudança que ocorre.
