Society - feminine noun: a group of beings who live together in a gregarious state and in mutual collaboration. Concept: a society is a broad structure in which individuals establish relationships, almost always impersonal, but which have a collective aspect.
Every day, I can access the news from all over the world. Even though my views are usually biased, I feel it's clear that human society is experiencing moments of obvious frustration in its most fundamental objectives. Where is the sense of mutual collaboration? What have we done with our sense of collectivity, how have our interpersonal relationships come to lose so much of their meaning?
In a reality in which most of what is published suggests that hope is in agony, I am surprised to feel an indescribable force operating against the flow. Every day, it thrills me to hear about noble gestures, worthy initiatives and unexpected achievements. In my view, these flashes of auspicious vision are always linked to the intermediate point between the isolated individual and the society that often deprives us of connection through the illusion of permanent contact at all times.
In this space between disconnection and the unreal connection of virtuality, I find the fertile soil of a sense of community. In rediscovering our common unity as truly human beings, we courageously explore the field of what brings us together, and accept to dialogue with the diversity that sometimes tries to push us apart. In natural systems, diversity is always an expression of richness. But it's important to point out that respect for the limits of life systems is also an insurmountable norm.
In the logic of Life, all growth has a limit. In this sense, if I take a critical look at the structural causes of the crises that our society is experiencing, a dominant paradigm always comes to mind, one that operates with disregard for the most elementary principles of the manifestation of life. I'm referring to the dominant economic paradigm, which proposes the concept of more is better, always and at any price. By opting for quantity over quality, we leave out the most important part of everything, the uniqueness, the preciousness of the manifestation of each being and each thing. In doing so, we close the door to any possibility of integral relationships, because beings become things. And objects, even if they are very useful and expensive, become mere useless ornaments in miserably luxurious lives.
Perhaps we should ask ourselves if there is a solution to the wars, the avoidable suffering, the endless sadness, the oppressive hopelessness. I don't believe in solutions. But I do trust in natural processes. I feel that the crisis carries within it the seeds of true development. I think it's up to me to do what I can, where I am, with the resources I have. As a basis, gratitude for being able to act; as nourishment, the possibility of experiencing and nurturing healthy relationships; as fruit, I don't care what comes of it. Whatever has to be, will be, because things are the way they are. But we can remain lucid and do what needs to be done, without controlling or losing control in the face of the unexpected, because that's what real life is all about.
We follow. Let's cherish our precious human life.
