Camping na Nature Community durante o Encontro Europeu da Rede Global de Ecovilas

It is time to weave the world we know is possible

I returned on Sunday from the European Meeting of the Global Ecovillage Network, held from 13 to 18 July 2026 at Nature Community in Germany. It was there that I took this photo from my pitch on the campsite.

It was like revisiting a seed planted over twenty years ago and seeing it sprout, blossom and bear new fruit amidst unprecedented challenges. In these more than two decades of involvement with the ecovillage movement, I realise that the Vision is very much alive, but it calls for a new maturity – one that is connected to local realities and more aware of the universal responsibility we bear for the well-being of all beings.

Consistency between words and actions

Having heard and witnessed so many stories from communities with such diverse experiences, it became impossible not to reflect on the issue of consistency: to what extent do our community practices align with our rhetoric on care, regeneration and voluntary simplicity?

A genuine sense of community extends beyond the geographical boundaries of the ecovillage and must be expressed through a deep connection with the region in which it is situated, with its people, culture, economy and ecosystems. To be a community, in this sense, is to be committed to the local area, helping to strengthen life in all its forms.

Every person is a small community

Similarly, in our individual lives, each person is, in themselves, a small “community” engaged in constant reciprocal interaction: family, neighbourhood, work colleagues, local area, planet.

We are part of the causes and conditions that enable our potential and our sense of fulfilment to manifest, but we also influence the possibilities for those around us to flourish. To recognise this is to accept that there is no spiritual, ecological or ethical path in isolation: every personal choice has an impact on the web of relationships of which we are a part.

It is essential to consciously cultivate a balance between individual wellbeing and collective wellbeing. A simple, mindful life is not a selfish retreat, but rather a refinement of priorities: looking after oneself so that one can look after others better; practising moderation in order to respect limited resources — material, emotional, relational and in terms of time.

A sense of fulfilment is experienced on a personal level, but it is only fully realised when we recognise that it is inextricably linked to the well-being of the community and the planet we inhabit.

It is time to weave a world that is possible

We are facing global challenges — ecological, social, economic and existential. The experience of ecovillages and the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) shows that another way of organising our lives is possible, tangible and already underway.

At the European meeting, this conviction was reinforced by seeing people from many countries united by a commitment to creating regenerative cultures, integrating ecological, social, economic and worldview dimensions into a path of continuous learning.

The message I bring with me is clear: it is time to weave, through every action in our daily lives, the world that we know is possible to experience and pass on to future generations.

Here is an invitation to take action. May we, in our own unique way, transform participation into commitment, inspiration into daily practice, and ideals into consistency and integrity.

We can strengthen our sense of community, support or get involved in an ecovillage or a local or regional community project, rethink our consumption patterns, and nurture more caring and kind relationships. Every action can be an expression of the universal responsibility we have for the wellbeing of all beings.

To live simply and mindfully is to choose, every day, to be part of the world not as consumers, but as co-creators of a fairer, more compassionate society that is consciously integrated into the web of life.
